Yoga in Maharashtra

Maharashtra holds an unusual place in the history of modern yoga. In 1918 Shri Yogendra founded The Yoga Institute in Mumbai, often called the oldest organised yoga centre in the world, with the aim of teaching yoga to householders rather than only to ascetics. In 1924 Swami Kuvalayananda founded Kaivalyadhama in Lonavala, where yoga was studied with laboratory methods. And in 1975 B.K.S. Iyengar opened his institute in Pune, the home of Iyengar yoga.

The state is also a centre for meditation. Dhamma Giri at Igatpuri, near Nashik, established in 1976, is the main centre of the Vipassana tradition taught by S.N. Goenka and runs free residential courses. Today, alongside these institutions, Maharashtra's cities have studios, society batches, hospital-based programs and online teachers.

Practising through the seasons

  • Monsoon on the coast and ghats. Mumbai, Thane and Lonavala get very heavy rain from about June to September. Outdoor groups move indoors, and travel to classes can be slow.
  • Hot summers inland. Vidarbha and Marathwada, including Nagpur, get very hot from April to June. Practise early in the morning, choose a ventilated room and drink water before and after class.
  • Winter is the easiest season. From November to February most of the state has cool, dry mornings, ideal for park batches and retreats.

Choosing a class in Maharashtra

  • Stay close to home or work. In Mumbai and Pune, a class near your station or office is the one you will keep up.
  • Check training. Look for Yoga Certification Board (YCB) certification, Yoga Alliance registration, or training from a known institution.
  • Book a trial class. Notice whether the teacher explains poses and offers easier versions.
  • Tell the teacher about health issues. For back pain, pregnancy, high blood pressure or recent surgery, check with your doctor first. Read our yoga safety tips.
