Yoga in Kolkata

In 1923 Bishnu Charan Ghosh, younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda, founded a college of physical education in Kolkata. His school combined yoga postures with strength training, breath control and therapy, and its students carried the method abroad. One of them, Bikram Choudhury, later built the hot yoga style that bears his name. The Ghosh lineage marked its centenary in 2023.

The city also has a strong meditation tradition. Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, is just across the Hooghly. Today Kolkata's yoga ranges from para clubs and community halls to studios in Salt Lake and New Town and live online classes.

Places for morning practice

Rabindra Sarobar in south Kolkata, the Maidan, Central Park in Salt Lake and Eco Park in New Town all draw walkers and yoga groups early in the morning. Most neighbourhoods also have a para park or club ground where a teacher leads a daily batch.

Planning around Kolkata's weather

  • Humid summers (about March to June). Practise early, choose a ventilated room, drink water and carry a towel. Avoid hot yoga if you have heart or blood pressure problems.
  • Monsoon (about June to September). Waterlogging can make travel hard. Ask whether the center runs online classes on heavy-rain days.
  • Pujo season. Many batches pause or change timings around Durga Puja. Check before you pay for October.
  • Winter (about December to February). Mild mornings make this the best time for outdoor practice.

Tips for choosing a class in Kolkata

  • Stay close. A batch in your para or near your Metro station is the easiest to keep up.
  • Check training. Look for Yoga Certification Board (YCB) certification, Yoga Alliance registration or training in a known lineage.
  • Know the style. Physical culture classes can be demanding. Beginners, older students and people with injuries may prefer a slower Hatha class.
  • Book a trial. Notice whether the teacher corrects students and offers easier versions.
  • Health first. Read our yoga safety tips and tell the teacher about any condition.
