Yoga in Goa
Over the past few decades Goa's quieter beaches have become one of India's best-known places for yoga holidays and teacher training, alongside Rishikesh and Kerala. Shalas made of bamboo and palm thatch go up near the sand for the dry season, offering drop-in classes, week-long retreats and 200-hour courses.
Goa also has a steady local scene that runs all year: studios and gyms in Panaji, Porvorim, Margao and Mapusa, society batches, and teachers who offer home and online classes. If you live in Goa, those are usually more practical than a beach retreat.

When to go
- Dry season (about November to April). Most retreats and seasonal shalas run in these months, with the busiest weeks around Christmas and New Year. Book ahead.
- Monsoon (about June to September). Goa gets very heavy rain. Many beach shalas close, while town studios, some resorts and Ayurveda centres stay open.
- Heat. April and May are hot and humid. Practise early and drink plenty of water.
Choosing a retreat or teacher training
- Check registration. For teacher training, ask whether the course is registered with Yoga Alliance or recognised by the Yoga Certification Board (YCB).
- Ask about the teachers. Who leads the classes, and how long have they taught?
- Read the daily schedule. Count the hours of practice, theory and free time.
- Understand the price. Is food and accommodation included? What is the refund policy if you cancel?
- Look for honest reviews. Read reviews on more than one platform, and be wary of very low prices for 200-hour courses.
- Health first. Intense daily practice is demanding. Tell the teacher about any injury, and read our yoga safety tips.
